General Information

Breast milk is the natural and ideal food for a newborn baby. Breastfeeding offers indisputable benefits both for the mother and the child. There are two ways that trained healthcare professionals can ensure breastfeeding is successful and will continue until mother and baby wish so. The first is to provide detailed information to expectant mothers on breastfeeding and the second is to offer them meaningful support after childbirth.

Services

At the Breastfeeding Clinic, expectant mothers can:

  • Find out all about the benefits of breastfeeding for the health of themselves and their babies.
  • Learn that the foundation for successful breastfeeding is to commence right away.
  • Find out all the skills and techniques that facilitate breastfeeding and stimulate milk production.
  • Discuss how to commence and continue breastfeeding until the baby gets home, in the event of early childbirth.
  • Receive special instructions for successful breastfeeding in case of twins.
  • Discuss how to continue breastfeeding after returning to work or in the event of emergency separation.
  • Learn how to breastfeed an older child and a newborn at the same time.

After the baby is born, the Breastfeeding Clinic can:

  • Offer practice on various baby-holding positions. Changing breastfeeding positions can offer relief in case of sore nipples, local breast hardness or onset of mastitis.
  • Provide guidance on establishing breastfeeding, even when it is initiated under special conditions, e.g. premature babies, as well as assistance on maintaining lactation, even when it is necessary to return to work shortly after childbirth.
  • Help mothers deal with breastfeeding issues, such as overburdening, painful breastfeeding, sore nipples, mastitis and nipple thrush.
  • Assist new mothers in the use of special breastfeeding devices if necessary, e.g. nipple shields for flat or inverted nipples, complementary feeding devices (SNS, container and tube).
  • Offer support for breastfeeding children with special needs, e.g. hypotonia, cleft palate.
  • Design a diet plan for the mother in the event of food allergies, with the most common being cow’s milk protein allergy.
  • Set a timeframe for starting to introduce solid foods into the baby’s diet within the first six months.

Medical Infrastructure & Technology

The Clinic is hosted in a part of the Hospital that ensures privacy and comfort for breastfeeding mothers. It is equipped with special breastfeeding devices and aids, which might prove useful to breastfeeding mothers.
